Evening by Tudor Arghezi A spider like a big mole Stumbles long on six hair stakes Barely seen and he is whole With his needs and with his aches Coming from his daily work, Speeds along with hurry’s lot. Waiting’s hanging from a cork, Up, his house on ceiling wrought. Doesn’t see me, doesn’t dig me, Doesn’t know me anyway, Why am I so large and seemy? Why is he so small away? translated by Moon Steer, March 2002 Visătorul de Lucian Blaga Spânzurat de aer printre ramuri se framântă în mătasa-i un păianjen. Raza lunii l-a trezit din somn. Ce se zbate? A visat că raza lunii-i fir de-al lui şi cearc’ acum să se urce până-n ceruri, sus, pe-o rază. Se tot zbate îndrăzneţul şi s-azvârle. Şi mi-e teamă c-o să cadă – visătorul. The Dreamer by Lucian Blaga Hanging from the air among branches a spider frets in his silk. The moon’s ray woke him from his sleep. Why does he toss about? He has dreamed the moonbeam is a thread of his own, now he tries to climb up to the heavens on the beam. The daring fool keeps struggling and hurls himself upwards. And I am afraid he’ll fall – the dreamer. Ladder to Heaven by Marin Sorescu A silken thread, spun by a spider Hangs from the ceiling Just above my bed. Day by day I watch it descend. And think, ‘now heaven offers me ladder, It reaches to me from above’. Weakened though I be, A shadow of my former self, I think the ladder might not Support my weight. Listen, my soul, on you go ahead, Softly, softly. (Translation by Constantin Roman)

Trei poezii de dragoste/ Three Poems about Love
Odă (în metru antic)
de Mihai EminescuNu credeam să-nvăţ a muri vreodată;
Pururi tânăr, înfăşurat în manta-mi,
Ochii mei ‘nălţam visători la steaua
Singurătăţii.
Când deodată tu răsărişi în cale-mi,
Suferinţă tu, dureros de dulce…
Până-n fund băui voluptatea morţii
Ne-ndurătoare.
Jalnic ard de viu chinuit ca Nessus,
Ori ca hercul înveninat de haina-i;
Vino iar în sân, nepăsare tristă;
Ca să pot muri linişiti, pe mine
Mie redă-ma!
Ode (in ancient meter)
by Mihai Eminescu Hardly had I thought I should learn to perish;
Ever young, enwrapped in my robe I wandered,
Raising dreamy eyes to the star styled often
Solitude’s symbol.
All at once, however, you crossed my pathway –
Suffering – you, painfully sweet, yet torture…
To the lees I drank the delight of dying –
Pitiless torment.
Sadly racked, I’m burning alive like Nessus,
Or like Hercules by his garment poisoned;
Nor can I extinguish my flames with every
Billow of oceans.
By my own illusion consumed I’m wailing
On my own grim pyre in flames I’m melting…
Can I hope to rise again like the Phoenix
Bird from the ashes?
May all tempting eyes vanish from my pathway
Come back to my breast, you indifferent sorrow!
So that I may quietly die, restore me
To my own being!
(1883, Translated by Andrei Bantas)
Sonetul CLXXIII
de Vasile VoiculescuTe mistuie iubirea? Credeai că-i o păpuşă,
Înflăcăratu-i spirit, urgie, le consumă;
Sonnet CLXXIII
by Vasile VoiculescuIs love a flame? You thought it was a doll,
To play with, like a child, with fickle glee,
A salamander she wants you to be,
Devour’d by the same flame in which you fall.
She is the cruel mistress of the flesh,
And pleasure, as her spirit both consumes;
Twin soul she seeks in our heart’s frail bloom…
Don’t tempt her, or you’ll end up in her mesh,
A slag-filled urn of pain. Does your lust claim
To dress your joy as though a party dress?
You dread her like she’s death and nothing less…
For, to succeed, she breaks your human frame,
It turns you into an abyss, so there
She and th’entire world will worm a lair.
Lumina
de Lucian Blaga
Lumina ce-o simt
năvălindu-mi în piept când te văd,
oare nu e un strop din lumina
creată în ziua dintâi,
din lumina aceea-nsetată adânc de viaţă?
Nimicul zăcea-n agonie
când singur plutea-ntuneric şi dat-a
un semn Nepătrunsul:
“Să fie lumină!”
O mare
Light
by Lucian Blaga
Is not the lightthat floods my heart when I look at you
a speck of the light
made on the first day
from light thirsting deep for life?
Nothingness lay in agony
when all alone drifting through the dark
the Unfathomed gave a sign:
“Let there be light!”
An ocean
and wild storm of light
straightway was made:
a thirst for sin, desire, élan and passion,
a thirst for world and sun.
The blinding light that was,
where has it disappeared? Who knows?
The light I feel flooding
my breast when I look at you – wonderful one –
is maybe the last speck of light
made on the first day.
